In 2000 Joe Cabral first farmed the steep hillside vines of Lava Vine Vineyard by hand, recovering some of the old vines and adding new ones.

2004 was Lava Vines first Harvest with 300 cases of Syrah produced.

In 2007 we purchased the current winery site on the Silverado Trail. The Lava Vine tasting room was opened in 2008, and we have been celebrating the vast variety of varietals throughout the Valleys ever since.  Because we are calibrated for a smaller plot, we are able to find some exciting lesser-known varietals found right here in Calistoga, the greater Napa Valley, and the surrounding areas from Suisun Valley up to Mendocino County as well.

In 2016,  Lava Vine was acquired by Von Strasser Winery.  Von Strasser has been in Napa Valley since 1990.  Their mission has always been to create the finest Diamond Mountain District wines.  Check out owner Rudy Von Strasser's story here .

The new relationship with Von Strasser gives us a few new sources for Lava's ever-evolving wine list.  In the near future we will be seeing a Pinot Noir from Santa Lucia Highlands, as well as a Malbec and a Grüner Veltliner from Diamond Mountain (Von Strasser was the first commercial producer of Grüner Veltliner grown here in California).
